The Sieveringen parish church of St. Severin is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Sievering part of the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling .

history

Probably a chapel of a manor house originally stood on the site of today's Sieveringen parish church. The massive tower could even go back to a Roman watchtower. In 1330 a "Capelle ze Suferingen" was first mentioned in a document. Sievering was raised to a parish as early as 1348. A document from 1421 proves that the church was originally consecrated to St. Andrew . The first pastor, a plebanus de Mitterhoven , is documented from 1355. It was a canon of Klosterneuburg Monastery , to which the Sievering parish still belongs to this day.

The namesake of the church changed: St. Severin , who is said to have worked here as a missionary in the 5th century, replaced St. Andrew.

Over the centuries the Sieveringen church has been rebuilt and expanded several times. The nave , the choir with buttresses as well as two sculptures, a mount of olives scene and the figure of a pelican still date from the Gothic period . All other parts of the church come from the major church renovation in 1896. Several of the buildings attached to the church were demolished that year, the west facade, the south portal as well as the tower and roof were completely redesigned. The new elements were adapted to the old building and kept in the form of the Gothic. The cemetery, which was formerly grouped around the church, was closed and converted into a park. Some of the old tombstones were integrated into the church facade. In the park itself there is a baroque Trinity column from 1692, which was erected in thanks for the extinction of the plague . The statue of St. John Nepomuk preserved in the park also dates from the Baroque period .

Inside the parish church impresses with a four-bay hall, which was provided with an early baroque cross vault after the Turkish wars . The baroque high altar picture shows the patron saint of the church, Saint Severin, while the northern side altar picture recalls the martyrdom of the former church patron Andreas. Opposite to it is the representation of a Madonna with the child in another side altar . The pulpit , which depicts the four evangelists and Christ as Savior, is also in the Baroque style . Only the baptismal font from the 16th century stands out from the rest of the interior.

Today the parish of Sievering is also looked after by the pastor of Grinzing. The tasks of the parish chancellery are also performed by the parish of Grinzing .
