history

A church in Kahlenbergerdorf was mentioned in a document as early as 1168 and was already an independent parish in 1256 . The church was destroyed by the Turks in 1529 and 1683 , in 1809 it was devastated in the course of the Napoleonic Wars and each time it was rebuilt or repaired by Klosterneuburg Monastery . Conversions took place in 1633 and 1771. The parish church is based on a simple, late Romanesque - early Gothic building. Due to the last renovation, the church got a baroque character. The south tower was also given a baroque hood. The white groin vault inside, however, was built after the church was destroyed by the Turks. The vault rests on the belts and pillars of the preserved, medieval part of the church.

inner space

The central element of the church is the baroque high altar with the depiction of St. Andrew. It is flanked by statues of St. Leopold and St. Florian . The depiction of Saint George dates from 1827 and was painted by the Nazarene painter Johann Stätter based on a sketch by Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld . To the right of the high altar is a late Baroque St. Mary's altar, which was created around 1760. The late Gothic Madonna in the center , however, dates from the early 16th century. On the south wall of the church there is a large, baroque crucifix that comes from a no longer preserved cross altar. This was attached to the northern outer wall in 1732, but removed in the 19th century. Other noteworthy elements of the church are a Gothic baptismal font made of red marble (around 1500), an offering box with rosette decoration, and a shell-shaped holy water font (both from the 17th century). The organ was built in 1849 by Franz Ullmann .
