The Hofmannsthal-Schlössl , formerly Maria Theresa Schlössl and Fuchs Schlössl is a small castle in the 23rd  Viennese district Liesing .

Location and architecture

The Hofmannsthal-Schlössl is located at Ketzergasse 471 in the Rodaun district . The baroque complex consists of a two-story mansion and a two-story Stöckl with a gate wall in between, behind which a rectangular courtyard extends.

There a Biedermeier staircase leads up to the manor house. The set designer Alfred Roller designed its vestibule at the beginning of the 20th century . The manor house has stucco ceilings from the 18th century and is decorated with wall paintings in the style of Johann Christian Brands , Louis- Seize furniture and several portrait paintings from the 18th century. On the first floor of the Stöckl there is a chapel with a stitch cap vault .

history

The building was erected in 1724 for Prince Trautson . Maria Theresa of Austria bought it a few years later and gave it to her confidante and master of the court, Countess Karoline von Fuchs-Mollard . For these reasons the small castle was also known under the names Maria-Theresien-Schlössl and Fuchsschlössl . After the countess's death, the property changed hands several times.

In 1901 the newly married Viennese writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal rented a room in the Schlössl. Hofmannsthal lived here until his death in 1929. His wife Gerty continued to live here until she had to flee to England in 1938 after the annexation of Austria . The next resident was the National Socialist homeland poet Maria Grengg , who lived in the Schlössl from the early 1940s until her death in 1963.

In 1988 the Hofmannsthal-Schlössl was restored. It can be viewed after prior registration.
