Rodaun Castle

The Rodaun Castle is a castle in the 23rd district of Vienna Liesing . It houses the Rodaun Castle School Center of the Catholic Private Schools in Sta. Christiana.

Location and architecture

main building

The three-storey castle is located in the Rodaun district at Willergasse 53 to 57. Its irregular appearance is due to the fact that additions and other structural changes were made to the building from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The construction work that was decisive for the present shape of the castle took place in the late 16th and early 17th centuries and at the beginning of the 20th century. The early Classical garden facade, which probably dates from 1776, is also striking .

The architect Robert Oerley probably designed all the extensions from 1907/1908 (in the north) and from 1910/1911 (the school chapel wing in the south). In the school chapel wing are the former refectory and the former student assembly room, which was later used as a gym. In the school chapel on the third floor there is an altar made to a design by Clemens Holzmeister with brass cladding. The statue of the Madonna on the side of the altar is the work of the Val Gardena sculptors . The academic sculptor Hugo Kirsch, who lives in the nearby town of Mauer , created Stations of the Cross from ceramic for the school chapel in 1928.

The chapel dedicated to Saints Philip and James, on the other hand, was built in the middle of the 18th century and is located in a wing of the castle that dates back to the Renaissance and is probably medieval in its core. The chapel was expanded and rebuilt by Robert Oerley from 1904 to 1906. There are several canvas paintings from the 17th century, a copy of the Black Madonna by Jasna Góra probably made at the beginning of the 18th century , an altar with a retable from the 18th century and other works of art from the end of the 19th century.

Castle Park

Castle Park

Like the castle itself, the extensive castle park is now used by the school center. The tree avenues go back to the baroque period. The so-called Maria-Theresien-Villa is a single-storey garden house from the 17th century, which was later rebuilt several times, most recently in 1978/79. The Torstöckl is a two-story building in the northeast of the park. At the beginning of the 20th century, the garden was given a large Lourdes grotto . At the lowest point of the park is a derelict former farm building from the 16th century.

Not far from Rodaun Castle are the Rodaun mountain church and the Hofmannsthal-Schlössl , the former home of the Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal .

history

Rodaun Castle was first mentioned in a document on March 2, 1405 as "vest Radaun", but the building probably already existed in the 12th century.

During the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, the castle was probably less damaged than other castles in the area due to its elevated position. In addition to the towns of Hernals , Inzersdorf and Vösendorf , Rodaun Castle was one of the centers of Protestantism around Vienna in the 16th century . In 1580 the Protestant church visitation for the quarter under the Vienna Woods was held in the palace. Seven Shepherds have been part of the great manorial rule of the castle since the 16th century . After the Protestant barons of Landau, there was a frequent change of ownership. The last owners in the manorial period that lasted until 1848 were members of the House of Liechtenstein since 1831 .

In 1898 the Mautner Markhof family donated 158,000 guilders to the Roman Catholic order of Sta. Christiana (sisters of the holy childhood of Jesus and Mary) who specialized in education and nursing. Before 1899, a large medieval tower that was in an artificial state of ruin was demolished. The order opened a boarding school for girls in the castle, the school of which has had public rights since 1902. In the neighboring town of Kalksburg , the Jesuits had run a boarding school for boys with the Kalksburg College since 1856 . During the Second World War , a tank barracks was housed in Rodaun Castle. Schools were resumed after the end of the war. In the years 1975 to 1977 modifications and restoration took place.

The Schloss Rodaun school center now includes a primary school , a cooperative middle school , a technical school with an advanced course and a day boarding school.
