The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel , also known as the Schanzel Chapel , on Obere Donaustraße in Wilhelm Kienzl Park in Vienna was consecrated to the priest and martyr Johannes Nepomuk and is a listed building. The statue of the saint located here is one of the numerous depictions of Johannes Nepomuk in Vienna .

history

The history of the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel in the 2nd Viennese district Leopoldstadt is shaped by several new buildings at different locations. The name Schanzelkapelle is derived from the first location, the Schanzel - a former fruit market.

1729 (?) To 1741

The date of construction of the oldest Johannes Nepomuk chapel has not been recorded. It is believed, however, that this happened in 1729 according to plans by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt . In 1741 the wooden chapel on the Schanzel on the right bank of the Danube Canal was razed for fear of French and Bavarian troops marching into Austria.

1744-1884

In 1744 the toll office built a new chapel with statues on the outside at the same location. However, the income from the foundations dedicated to the Schanzelkapelle were not enough to maintain the building. The City of Vienna had to help out financially in order to repair the damage caused by an ice rush in 1831 . Later maintenance work could usually only be financed through collections.

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel stood in the way of the construction of the Stephanie Bridge, so that the chapel was demolished at the city's expense and rebuilt in its earlier form on the left bank of the Danube Canal in Obere Donaustraße. The work began on July 29, 1884 under the direction of chief engineer Karl Thalhammer and assistant engineer Josef Kohl and was completed on April 22, 1886. The work on the interior design was finished on May 4th of the same year.

1886-1908

The ceremonial consecration of the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel took place on May 13, 1886. Since the Schanzelkapelle and the rifle house of the Kaiserbadschleuse, to be built from 1908, were not architecturally compatible, it was decided to relocate the chapel by about 130 meters upstream. A municipal council resolution approved on December 10, 1907 an agreement between the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna and the municipality of Vienna, according to which the commission wanted to share in the costs.

A resolution of the city council on June 17, 1908 approved the new location of the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel and the planned costs. The demolition work on the Schanzelkapelle began on August 17, 1908.

1908 – today

Reconstruction at the new location under the direction of Josef Pürzl , who was supported by the architect Gustav Schwager, began on August 29 and was completed in mid-November of the same year. In the new construction, numerous components of the previous chapel, such as the wrought iron grating, pedestals, columns, beams, figures, the bell, the altar and the prayer chairs were used again. The ceiling painting in the baroque style was made by Friedrich Paul Weise. On November 29, 1909, the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Godfried Marschall .

The chapel was damaged during the Second World War. With the help of sponsors, however, this damage could be repaired. Between 1986 and 1987 the Johannes Nepomuk Chapel was renovated by the municipality of Vienna.

The Johannes-Nepomuk-Chapel belongs to the parish Sankt Leopold with the Leopoldskirche . The technical supervision of the building was taken over by MA 34 - Construction and Building Management .

description

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel in its current form is a small, free-standing central building with an almost square floor plan. The roof was designed as a flat dome with a lantern.

Above the base there are large arched windows on each side, which are flanked by pilasters. There are triangular gables above the window openings. In the corner niches of the Schanzelkapelle figures of Saints Wenceslas, Charles Borromeo, Augustine and Leopold were placed.

The statue of Johannes Nepomuk from the first quarter of the 18th century stands on a pedestal. In front of it is a volute canteen from the second quarter of the 18th century.
