The pilgrimage church Maria Grün is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage and branch church in the Prater in Vienna's 2nd district Leopoldstadt . The church is a branch church of the parish Donaustadt and is located in the Dean's Office 2/20 of the Vicariate Vienna City belonging to the Archdiocese of Vienna . It is consecrated to St. Mary .

history

The Freudenau in the Vienna Prater was originally only sparsely populated. There was a one-class elementary school near the pleasure house to enable the children from the area to attend school. The responsible church was the parish of Sankt Johann Nepomuk in Praterstrasse . The large distance between school and church prevented the children in particular from attending mass.

predecessor

In order to provide the schoolchildren with a minimum of religious support under these circumstances, the teacher Anton Schentz hung a picture of the Virgin, which was consecrated on May 16, 1863, on a tree and held small devotions there with the children. In the absence of a church, the adults also used this picture as a place of worship.

In 1911, the innkeeper Plankenbüchler had a statue of Mary erected near the image of Mary, which also attracted the faithful. They in turn attached images of saints to the surrounding trees, so that the Prater administration was forced to remove them to protect the trees. It should have been several truckloads.

The municipality of Vienna built a new school in Aspernallee near Handelskai , but church attendance remained a problem.

In 1895, permission was given to use the gym of the new school for school masses and also for holy masses on Sundays and public holidays. Donations made it possible to buy an altar and the other utensils necessary for the mass.

At the same time as the handover of the newly built Kaiser Jubilee Church on Archduke Karl Platz to the priests of the Trinitarian Order on July 15, 1917 , they were also entrusted with pastoral care and religious instruction in the districts of Donaustadt, Prater, Krieau and Freudenau . The area mentioned was raised to an independent parish Donaustadt on July 1, 1921.

At the end of 1923, the City School Council for Vienna withdrew its permission to hold church services in the school's gymnasium.

Maria Green

The establishment of the church goes back to an idea of the priest responsible for pastoral care and religious instruction, who found support from Cardinal Archbishop Friedrich Gustav Piffl .

The Ministry of Commerce, which was then responsible for the Prater as federal property, was able to lease a plot of land for a period of 50 years. City architect Josef Münster (1869–1946) was commissioned to build the church.

The foundation stone was laid on October 12, 1924. The completed church was consecrated on December 21, 1924 by Cardinal Piffl. The church furnishings came from Langenlois . There the administration of the poor house had left the previous house chapel and sold its furnishings.

As the new church became more popular, so did the number of pilgrimages to Maria Grün. The peak was reached in 1937 with 72 pilgrimages. After the connection of Austria to the Third Reich , but that number dropped sharply since the National Socialist regime prevented the pilgrims on church attendance. Today the church is among other things a pilgrimage destination for the Burgenland Croats living in Vienna .

Maria Grün was damaged for the first time by a bomb attack on December 27, 1944, which resulted in the destruction of the church's windows. The front of the church was destroyed in an air raid on February 15, 1945. The ground fighting in the Prater caused further damage between April 8 and 12. On October 10, 1948, the first mass was celebrated in the restored Maria Grün pilgrimage church.

On September 29, 1985, Auxiliary Bishop Karl Moser consecrated a new organ that replaced the harmonium that had been used previously.

In 2009 the church was extensively renovated.

The building was erected as a simple church building for around 300 people with a rectangular floor plan. The westernmost yoke is crowned by a roof turret with an onion helmet. On the east side of the church there is the sacristy in an extension , on the south side of which there are three frescoes depicting St. George , the Mariazell Madonna and St. Hubertus .

The first altarpiece was painted by the painter Hans Jakubetz on the wall above the altar and depicted Mary with the baby Jesus in the Prater meadows. This was followed by a miraculous image by Anka von Löwenthal di Madonna del Monte, which also showed Mary with the baby Jesus on a park bench in the Prater seated shows as an altarpiece. This picture was consecrated on May 6, 1928. The current altarpiece is by Anna Tschadesch and dates from 1969.

The organ comes from Bruno Riedl . The chime consists of three bells that were delivered during the war but not melted down:

  • Cast in 1634,
  • Cast by Thomas Zwelfer in 1702 and
  • Cast by Johann Josef Pfrengler in 1760.

It was acquired by the Archbishop's Ordinariate and donated to Maria Grün . They were consecrated on November 16, 1924 by Prelate Wenzel Merinsky.

South of the church is a small square chapel, consecrated in 1931 by the papal nuncio Sibilia. It was built to protect a field altar, which was used at large outdoor masses, from bad weather.

Remarks

  1. The place historically connected with the innkeeper Plankenbichler , the so-called Waldandacht , a clearing originally maintained by Plankenbichler, was located (at least until the 1930s) at the end of the Schwarzenstockallee leading east from the Lusthaus towards the Danube river ; it is locally unrelated to the church built in 1924. - See: Waldendacht.
