Johannes Acronius Frisius

Johannes Acronius Frisius , or Johannes Atrocianus Frisius (* probably 1520 in the West Frisian village of Akkrum ; † October 18, 1564 in Basel ) was a scholar, doctor, astronomer and mathematician.

The humanistic scholar is named after his birthplace Akkrum ( Boarnsterhim municipality ). From 1542 he studied in Basel . In 1545 he earned a bachelor's degree; 1547 the Magister Artium and from that year worked as professor of mathematics, from 1549 as professor of logic at the University of Basel . In 1551 he married Verena Suracher. In 1564, the last year of his life, he obtained a doctorate in medicine. He died of the plague. More than through his Latin poetry and humanistic works, he gained notoriety through his mathematical astronomical works.
