Johannes Anthonie Balthasar Stroebel (born November 23, 1821 in The Hague , † August 21, 1905 in Leiden ) was a Dutch genre painter, watercolorist, etcher and lithographer.

Stroebel studied at the Hague Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten with Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove and his son Hubertus van Hove .

Following the example of Johannes Vermeer and in particular of Pieter de Hoogh, he mainly painted genre pictures and typical old Dutch interiors with figures in costumes from the 17th century.

His paintings are characterized by warm colors and incident sunlight. He often used so-called views, through which a room or courtyard is visible through an open door or window, which indicates the depth.

In addition to oil painting, he dealt with watercolors, etchings and lithographs.

Ströbel taught at the Art Academy of The Hague and was the teacher of Jacob Maris , Charles Paul Gruppé , Hermina van der Haas and Louis Stutterheim . He worked mainly in The Hague, but also in Renkum , Leiderdorp and Leiden. He was a member of the Hague “ Pulchri Studio ” and the Amsterdam “ Arti et Amicitiae ” society.

His works can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam , the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag , the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo , the Teylers Museum in Haarlem and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam .
