Johannes Asen (librarian)

Johannes Asen (born August 11, 1882 in Elberfeld , † February 8, 1979 in Berlin-Lichterfelde ) was a German librarian and historian. He achieved fame above all as the author of the list of professors and lecturers "Complete directory of the teaching staff of the Berlin University, Volume I: 1810–1945" , Leipzig 1955.

Life

He was the son of the painter Theodor Asen from Elberfeld and his wife Dorothea nee Fürth. The painter Carl Theodor Asen was his older brother.

After his first lessons in elementary school, he attended the two grammar schools in Elberfeld and Bonn , then Johannes Asen studied at the universities of Bonn and Berlin. In Bonn, he received his doctorate in 1908 for Dr. phil. The topic of his dissertation was The Melaten Leper House near Cologne .

Johannes Asen worked as a volunteer at the University Library in Bonn. He then worked as an assistant librarian in Greifswald , at the State Library and most recently at the library of the Humboldt University in Berlin . There he was appointed library councilor in 1920.

Johannes Asen was, among other things, a member of the Society for Rhenish History and had specialized in Rhenish history.

In 1955 Johannes Asen retired from active professional life and retired in the western part of Berlin, where he died in 1979 at the age of 97.
