Johann Beringer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Bartholomäus Adam Beringer , also Johann Barthel Adam Beringer or just Barthel Adam Beringer (* around 1670 in Würzburg , † April 11, 1738 ibid) was a German doctor, professor of medicine in Würzburg and personal physician to the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg . Beringer was best known for a prank that students played on the collector of fossils.

Life

Johann Beringer is the son of JL Beringer who worked as a doctor at the Würzburg Juliusspital . He completed his medical studies in 1693. From December 14, 1694, he was an associate professor and from 1703 until his death in 1738 a full professor of medicine at the University of Würzburg , where he also worked as a botanist, professor of zootomy and dean. In 1695 he was commissioned as garden director with the creation of the new botanical garden on the grounds of the Juliusspital.

As the first doctor at the University Hospital Juliusspital, he was also the Prince Bishop's personal physician from 1701.

His life and his life's work, which is part of the Early Enlightenment, is overshadowed by the Würzburg Lying Stones , which he published in the Lithographia Wirceburgensis (Würzburg 1726, with a new title page 1767).

Beringer found several fossils in a sand pit in the area , which prompted him to publish a work in 1726 entitled: Lithographiae Wirceburgensis, ducentis lapidum figuratorum a potiori insectiformium prodigiosis imaginibus exornatae specime . With the find, however, students had played a trick on him, because the fossils that Beringer believed to be genuine had been made by a stonemason and buried at the site. For example, the word "donkey" could be read in Hebrew on one of the stones. Beringer later admitted his deception. Since then, the saying in scientific circles has been : "He felt like ringing" or "Some people have felt like ringing" for the proverbial meaning: "He was betrayed."

The forgery process was probably embedded in an intrigue by the Jesuits against the Würzburg historian Johann Georg von Eckhart .

Johannes Christoph Ludwig Beringer (1709–1746), university professor in Heidelberg and personal physician to the Prince-Bishop of Speyer , was his nephew.
