Johannes Bischoff
Johannes Bischoff ( March 19, 1874 in Berlin - October 10, 1936 in Darmstadt ) was a German opera singer ( bass baritone ), theater actor and director .
Life
Bischoff first studied law for four years at Berlin University. There he became a member of the Academic Liedertafel Berlin in the Sondershäuser Association in 1893/94 .
During his studies, theater director Hoffmann from Cologne made his acquaintance and prompted the young lawyer, who had often found recognition in families and social circles with his beautiful voice, to embark on a career as an artist. Bischoff took lessons from Mathilde Mallinger , singing teacher H. Weinbach and later from Franz Betz and made his debut at the Cologne City Theater, where he achieved great success as the "flying Dutchman" (1899). He worked in Cologne until 1904.
From 1904 to 1905 he took part with his wife Sofie David on a tour through North America with the Savage Opera Company and from 1905 to 1908 he worked at the Hoftheater Hannover , from 1908 to 1917 at the Berlin Court Opera. In 1917 he went to the Hoftheater Darmstadt , where he was engaged as a singer and director until 1934.
In 1927 he received the Georg Büchner Prize .
He died of the consequences of a traffic accident suffered in Cologne, but continued to perform in Darmstadt until shortly before his death.
