Johannes Bumüller (pastor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Bumüller (born September 22, 1873 in Ravensburg , † October 31, 1936 in Westheim ) was a Catholic priest, village pastor and anthropologist .

life and work

Bumüller was born the son of the city doctor and medical councilor Friedrich Bumüller . He was baptized in the name of Johann Anton, but later always wrote himself Johannes . Bumüller studied Catholic theology and was ordained a priest on January 29, 1896. In 1898 he took over the position of prefect at the St. Stephan college in Augsburg. At the same time he was enrolled at the University of Munich in the Faculty of Natural Sciences (Section II of the Philosophical Faculty) from the winter semester 1897/98 to the summer semester 1898 and wrote his doctoral thesis at the Anthropological Institute with the anthropologist Johannes Ranke . The examination for doctor of philosophy took place on March 2, 1899 and the work appeared in print in the same year under the title The human femur: together with contributions to the knowledge of the monkey femora .

After completing his doctorate, Bumüller was from 1901 to 1903 the founder, publisher and editor of Freie Deutsche Blätter: a weekly for politics, science and art , “one of the most influential reform Catholic (“ modernist ”) magazines in Europe”. At the end of October 1903, Bumüller, according to his own statement, handed over the editing of the magazine to other hands out of consideration for his health . According to Johann Kirchinger, however, he had to distance himself from the magazine under pressure from the Munich nunciature . He wrote a large number of contributions for these sheets.

In 1906 Bumüller became pastor in the parish of St. Johannes Baptist in Aufhausen in the district of Aichach (Upper Bavaria), "after the First World War first chairman of the Aichach district arable farming association and member of the BVP" ( Bavarian People's Party ). From 1924 until his retirement in 1931 he was pastor in Großaitingen . He died on October 31, 1936 as a Kommorant in Westheim .

Bumüller was a very productive writer and, following his early studies, specialized in anthropological topics, especially the history of human development and the examination of Darwinism . Several of his works achieved higher editions.
