Johannes Dörmann

Johannes Dörmann (born December 27, 1922 in Holzwickede ; † January 27, 2009 ) was a German Catholic theologian and missiologist .

Life

John Dörmann first studied mathematics and physics in teaching , then philosophy and theology to priests to be. In 1953 he was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Cologne , where he was also incardinated . From 1953 to 1966 Dörmann was a chaplain and pastor in various parishes.

Dörmann also studied missiology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , ethnology , ethnosociology and religious studies in Bonn and Basel . In 1963 he received his doctorate from Joseph Ratzinger . In 1966 he completed his habilitation in religious studies and missiology. Then he was a private lecturer from 1966 to 1970 until he took over a chair for missions and religious studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1970 . From 1970 until his retirement in 1984 he headed the Institute for Mission Studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University. In addition, Dörmann was visiting professor at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn from 1969 to 1975 .

His specialty was the antiquity research of Johann Jakob Bachofen . In several works he dealt critically with the theology of Pope John Paul II, who died on April 2, 2005, and the world prayer meeting in Assisi, which he initiated . Dörmann's books on the development of this Pope's ecumenical approach have been translated into several languages.

Johannes Dörmann last lived in Senden . He was a member of the Fördergemeinschaft Theologisches eV , which publishes and publishes the magazine Theologisches . After the death of the former editor Johannes Bökmann , Dörmann was also the editor for a transitional period.
