Johannes Daniël van Lennep

Johannes Daniël van Lennep (also: Johann Daniel van Lennep ; born November 18, 1724 in Leeuwarden ; † February 6, 1771 in Burscheid ) was a Dutch classical philologist .

Life

John's father was called Theodor Van Lennep and was a major of the Frisian Nassau regiment in Leeuwarden and his mother was called Sibilla Maria Louisa Hoefman. Since 1732 he had attended the Latin school in his hometown and on September 12, 1742 became a student at the University of Franeker . Lodewijk Caspar Valckenaer (1715–1785) in particular became his formative teacher here. To attend the lectures of Tiberius Hemsterhuis , he switched to the University of Leiden on September 19, 1747 . At that time his first work Coluthi Raptus Helenae appeared. Rec. In 1752 he was appointed professor of the Greek and Latin languages ​​at the University of Groningen , which post he took up on September 12 with the speech de Linguarum Analogia ex analogicis mentis actionibus probata (Groningen 1752). Van Lennep had also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and had been rector of the Alma Mater in 1762, which position he resigned on September 3, 1763 with the speech de Altitudine dictionis sacrae Novi Testamenti ad excelsam Longini disciplinam exacta (Groningen 1763).

On August 31, 1767 he was the successor of Gijsbertus Koen (1736-1767) for a salary of 1,600 guilders professor of the Greek language at the University of Franeker . But no sooner had he started his lectures than he suffered paralysis. In order to recover health, he decided to take a trip to the baths near Aachen. Although he recovered, he died on a trip made in the summer of 1770. His former student Everard Scheidius published a large number of the works he had started after his death.
