Johannes Günter Gerhartz

Johannes Günter Gerhartz SJ (born November 7, 1926 in Hamburg ; † April 8, 2016 in Cologne ) was a German Jesuit and canon lawyer .

Life

John Gunter Gerhartz joined in 1948 the Congregation of the Jesuits in. After his philosophical and theological studies in Pullach near Munich and Frankfurt Sankt Georgen, he was ordained a priest in Frankfurt am Main in July 1958. He was awarded a Dr. iur. can. PhD. In 1964 he became professor for canon law and in 1970 at the same time academic rector at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen .

Gerhartz was from the beginning of January 1972 to the beginning of January 1978 as provincial superior of the so-called "West German Province" responsible for the Jesuits in what was then the Federal Republic north of the Main and in Scandinavia. Subsequently, from the beginning of January 1978 to the beginning of January 1981 he was provincial superior of the "North German Province", which arose from the amalgamation of the "West Germans" and the "East German Province", including the Jesuits in Berlin and on the territory of the former GDR. After a sabbatical year, he then worked at the Curia of the Jesuits in Rome, there as Assistant to the Superior General for the “German Assistance” (1982 to 1987) and as General Secretary of the Order (“Secretarius Societatis”) from 1983 to 1992.

In 1992 he was appointed rector of the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe , a German-speaking seminary in Rome . After his retirement in 1998, he became a spiritual teacher in the St. Lambert Study House in Lantershofen , the so-called "Third Way of Education" priest training center. From 2007 he worked in pastoral care and retreat accompaniment in Aachen and most recently lived in the senior community of the Jesuits in Cologne-Mülheim.
