Life

Johannes Holst was born on the Elbe island Altenwerder. He attended elementary school and began an apprenticeship as a painter in Hamburg-Finkenwerder at the age of fourteen . Hinrich Paul Lüdders (1826–1897) taught him there . Holst was also based on Jack Spurling (1870-1933), Anton Melbye and Hugo Schnars-Alquist . In 1903 he got a contract with the art dealer Commeter, which brought him numerous orders from shipping companies and sailing clubs. Holst was known for his detailed ship portraits. According to estimates by his biographer Walter König, he created at least 2500 pictures of ships in around seventy years. He also built musical instruments.

Holst's works can be found in the Altona Museum , as well as in museums in Bremerhaven , Kiel and Prerow . Ship portraits of the Pamir by Holst's hand alone can be found in at least three museums.
