Johannes Jakob Boehm
John Jacob Boehm (* 9. February 1760 in Bucks County , † 1839 ), who later, Jacob Beam called, was an American farmer , miller and founder of the Jim Beam - distillery .
Life
Böhm's parents Nicolaus and Margaretha immigrated to North America via Philadelphia on October 23, 1752 . Johannes Jakob was the fourth of five children. At the age of 18 he moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland and settled there as a farmer. According to tradition, he made his first whiskey in 1788 from excess grain from his farm .
In 1790 he moved on to Kentucky and finally settled there in 1792. He built a water-powered mill . As a reward for his work he received part of their harvest from the other farmers. He used the excess grain that he received to make whiskey. In 1795 he sold his first barrel of whiskey under the brand name Old Jake Beam .
The distillery became his main occupation and he ran it until his son David Beam took over the business in 1820.
