Johannes "Hans" Jisse Duistermaat (born December 20, 1942 in Utrecht , † March 19, 2010 ) was a Dutch mathematician.

Duistermaat studied from 1959 at the University of Utrecht , where he received his doctorate under Hans Freudenthal in 1968 (Energy and entropy as real morphisms for addition and order). In 1969/70 he was a post-doctoral student at Lund University with Lars Hörmander . From 1971 he was at the University of Nijmegen , where he was professor from 1972. From 1974 he was the successor of Freudenthal Professor of Mathematics at the University of Utrecht. Most recently he was academy professor there from 2004. He died unexpectedly of a complication of pneumonia.

Duistermaat dealt with analysis, for example Fourier integral operators (with Lars Hörmander ) with applications to classical mechanics and discrete integrable systems, spectra of elliptic operators (with Victor Guillemin ), symplectic differential geometry (equivariate cohomology and Duistermaat-Heckman formula for the stationary phase, with Gert Heckman ), algebraic geometry , harmonic analysis on semi-simple Lie groups , singularities of maps.

Duistermaat was a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion from 1982 . He was an academy professor at the KNAW.

His 23 PhD students include Johan Kolk , Michael Ruzhansky and Hendrik Broer . Duistermaat was a passionate chess player.
