Loh came on 1 April 1909 as a midshipman in the Imperial navy one, completed his basic training at the Great cruiser SMS Victoria Louise and then came for further training at the Naval Academy, where he on 12 April 1910. Midshipman was appointed. He was then transferred to the small cruiser SMS Berlin on November 3, 1911, and was promoted there on September 19, 1912 to lieutenant at sea . From December 23, 1912 Lohs acted as a signal officer on the small cruiser SMS Strasbourg .

He retained this position through the outbreak of World War I until July 10, 1915. As a first lieutenant at sea (since May 2, 1915) Lohs then came for a month as 2nd radio officer on board the battle cruiser Seydlitz and then completed a two-month submarine training course at the submarine school. He was initially used as an officer on watch in the torpedo boat division and was appointed commander of SM UC 75 when it was commissioned on December 6, 1916 . The submarine belonged to the U-Flotilla Flanders I and operated from Zeebrugge in Flanders in the same way as later from January 1918 UB 57 . UB 57 came across a sea mine on August 14, 1918, whereby Lohs and his 33-man crew were killed.

Lohs succeeded in sinking enemy ship space of over 151,000 GRT on 13 patrols . This makes him one of the most successful submarine commanders of the First World War.

In the later Navy , the 3rd submarine flotilla was named after him.
