Johannes Matthaeus Koelz
Johannes Matthaeus Koelz (* 1895 in Mühldorf am Inn ; † July 3, 1971 ) was a German-British artist.
Life
In 1915 he went to the Western Front with the 7th Company of the Bavarian Infantry Regiment and served until the end of the war.
From 1919 he was a police officer in Munich and with the Bavarian Mountain Police as well as an instructor for unarmed combat at the Spandau Police School .
At the same time he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Koelz was a master student of Franz von Stuck and Olaf Gulbransson .
In March 1933 he moved to Maribor and returned to Hohenbrunn in 1935 . Because of the publication of satirical poems, he was threatened with arrest by the secret police in 1937; thanks to early warning, he was able to flee to Prague with his family .
In 1939 the escape went on to England via Rotterdam . Koelz was imprisoned as an "enemy alien" in 1940 and taken to the prisoner of war camp in Hay Shire (Australia) with the HMT Dunera . In 1941 Koelz returned to England and enlisted in the Royal Pioneer Corps . In June 1944 he moved to the RAOC repair unit. In 1946 he worked in Bad Tölz for the civil censorship of the US Army.
In 1950 he received a Masters in Art from New Mills Grammar School.
In 1957 his wife Claire died.
A triptych that he dismembered to hide from the Nazis is now on display in the New Walk Museum in Leicester . It was part of the exhibition "The World War 1914–1918: Events and Remembrance" in 2004 in the German Historical Museum.
