Johannes Wolfgang Pötzl (born March 25, 1930 in Vienna ; † November 2, 1993 ibid) was an Austrian physicist who worked in the field of semiconductor technology .

Life

The son of the psychiatrist Otto Pötzl studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna . He received his doctorate with a number theory work on star bodies with Edmund Hlawka . In addition, Pötzl studied technical physics at the Vienna University of Technology from 1952 to 1956 . Pötzl recognized the importance of semiconductor components early on and turned intensively to the physical principles and applications of these new components. When his appointment to a chair in Karlsruhe was imminent in 1966, his sponsor Herbert W. König succeeded in creating a new chair for physical electronics, which was dedicated ad personam to Hans Pötzl. From 1985 to 1991 he was director of the Institute for General Electrical Engineering and Electronics. In 1989 he received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize from the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
