Johannes Rütiner
Johannes Rütiner (born November 11, 1501 in St. Gallen ; † 1556 ibid) was a Swiss businessman , politician , chronicler and copyist .
life and work
Johannes Rütiner was the son of the weaver and canvas merchant Hans Rütiner and his wife Adelheid. From 1520 to 1524 he studied humanistic general education at the University of Basel and then worked as a weaver and canvas merchant. At the end of 1527, Rütiner married Engla, nee Keizer. They had six children together. His then 13-year-old daughter Anna survived him as the only child.
His political career ran parallel to his professional advancement. From 1534 he became an "Elfer", that is to say one of eleven members of the weavers' guild and thus a member of the St. Gallen Grand Council. From 1549 he was a member of the small council and also worked as a marriage judge.
Rütiner wrote chronical memoirs about everyday life in St. Gallen in Latin from 1529 to 1539 under the title “Diarium” as a sign of his membership of the humanistically educated elite of the city of St. Gallen. The total number of pages was 591 fully inscribed sheets with over 1,400 entries. He also copied the writings of his friend Johannes Kessler , Joachim Vadian and Johannes Stumpf . Rütiner owned a comprehensive library and cataloged St. Gallen private libraries.
