life and work

Schenk's father, a church musician, gave the six-year-old his first piano lessons. From the age of twelve onwards, the church musician Hans Martin Theill instructed him first to play the piano and later also to play the organ. Then he studied music at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf with Albrecht Schwinger (piano) and Johannes Geffert (organ) and was a long-time participant in the international jazz workshop at the Remscheid Academy for musical education and media education with Jasper van't Hof , Walter Norris , Glen Buschmann , Joe Viera , Herb Geller . After completing his studies, engagements and Europe-wide tours followed, especially during the long-term collaboration with the “Musical Broadway Company New York” with the musicals “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “West Side Story” and “Hair”.

In addition to his work as a solo pianist, Schenk has played in various jazz formations and worked with musicians such as Claudius Valk , Udo Schild , Bobby Stern , Paul Shigihara , Peter Fessler , Freddy Santiago and Melbra Rai. The release of two albums with arrangements of Bach's compositions under the title “As Time Goes BACH”, which were created with the participation of saxophonist Charlie Mariano , who died in 2009 , marks a high point in Johannes Schenk's career. With this program he and his ensemble ( Volker Heinze (bass), Roland Höppner (drums)) were guests at many festivals, including the Bach festivals in Leipzig, Ansbach, Köthen and Potsdam.

Johannes Schenk has been teaching at the Cologne University of Music and Dance since 2011.
