Johannes Scheyring (Ziering) (born March 10, 1505 in Magdeburg ; † May 8, 1555 ibid) was doctor of law, from 1535 councilor to the Duke of Braunschweig, 1539/42 mayor of Magdeburg and 1551 chancellor of the Duke of Mecklenburg in Schwerin.

Life

He was a nephew of the Magdeburg canon of the same name, Johannes Scheyring (1454–1516), and studied in Leipzig from 1521 , later in Wittenberg . From 1531 to 1533 he studied in Bologna and Siena law . In 1533 he returned to Magdeburg, where he married Anna (or Margareta) Alemann in 1535 . In 1536 he was councilor to Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig and councilor to Archbishop Christoph von Bremen. In 1539 and 1542 he was named as the first mayor of Magdeburg. He had the Magdeburg Roland renewed in 1539 and was one of the Protestant MPs who were sent to Ghent in 1540 to meet Emperor Charles V. After entering the Mecklenburg service in 1543 , he was promoted to Chancellor of the Mecklenburg Duke in Schwerin in 1551 . In 1552 he was named again in Magdeburg as a privy councilor to Bishop Joachim II of Brandenburg and Count Gebhard von Mansfeld.

Cranach portrait

A Cranach painting from 1534 can be clearly identified as a Scheyring because of the signet ring of the sitter, which shows Scheyring's coat of arms, also published by Cranach as a woodcut in 1534, and because the portrait matches another woodcut from the Cranach workshop. The painting has been in changing private ownership for some time, most recently at Christie's in London for auction 1537 on July 8, 2014.
