Johannes Tornikes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Tornikes ( Middle Greek Ἰωάννης Τορνίκης ; † after 1268) was a Byzantine Dux and Sebastokrator in the late 13th century.

Life

Johannes Tornikes came from the Georgian noble family of the Tornikioi , who had been at the top of the Byzantine military aristocracy since the 10th century. His father was most likely Demetrios Komnenos Tornikes . The general Konstantin Tornikes was thus his brother; his son of the same name became the father-in-law of the Trapezuntian emperor Michael Komnenos (r. 1341, 1344-1349).

Nothing is known about Johannes' childhood and youth. Around 1260 Emperor Michael VIII raised him to the high rank of Sebastokrator; this is attested by a letter written shortly after 1261 from the high-ranking diplomat and chronicler Georgios Akropolites , with whom he was in correspondence. In the Byzantine sources Johannes appear again in 1268 when he under his Sympentheros ( "counter-law") Michael VIII. As Dux of the theme Thracesian Theme officiated. The time and circumstances of his death are unknown.
