Johannes Christian Vogel (born May 15, 1963 ) is a German botanist and general director of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin . Its botanical abbreviation is " JCVogel ".

Life

After graduating from the Ratsgymnasium Bielefeld in 1982, he was a temporary soldier in the German Armed Forces until 1984. Vogel studied biology and law at Bielefeld University . As a student he worked at Bertelsmann on the night shift. After receiving his doctorate (1992–1995, Cambridge University in genetics ), he worked at the Natural History Museum in London from 1995 , where he was chief curator of the botanical department from 2004 to 2012 . Ferns were his field of research . Vogel has been General Director of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin since February 2012 . He also holds a professorship for biodiversity and scientific dialogue at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

His wife Sarah Darwin is a great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin . She is the Vice President of the Galapagos Conservation Trust . They have two sons together.

Vogel was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2010. Since the same year he has been a member of the Linné Society and since 2012 a member and deputy chairman of the bioeconomy council of the federal government. Since 2014 he has been chairman of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA). In summer 2016 he was appointed chairman of the European Open Science Policy Platform (OSPP) - DG Research & Innovation - by the European Commission .
