Johannes Weissenborn

Johannes Weißenborn (born January 19, 1878 in Hohnstein or Ernstthal , † May 3, 1937 in Bremen ) was a German ethnologist and museum official.

biography

Weißenborn was the son of a pastor. He graduated from high school in Dresden and studied theology , then geography and ethnology at the University of Leipzig . During his studies in 1899 he became a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli . In 1903 he obtained his doctorate on ethnological topics. phil. In 1904 he became an assistant in the ethnographic and prehistoric department of the Municipal Museum for Natural, Ethnic and Commercial Studies (today: Überseemuseum) in Bremen. In 1920 he became department head of the museum. He designed the ethnological collection and also managed the museum's aquarium and terrarium . From 1916 he was on the board of the Geographical Society . Musically gifted, he represented the organist of the Church of Our Lady during World War I , gave music lessons and wrote music reviews. In the museum work he was in the shadow of museum director Hugo Schauinsland and when he was replaced by the National Socialists , he was not allowed to succeed him as a Freemason .
