Johannes Zemelius ( Latinized from Jan Zemelka; * 1539 ; † December 27, 1607 ) was a Polish physician and politician of the Renaissance. He is considered a representative of the teachings of Andreas Vesalius , the founder of modern anatomy.

Life

Johannes Zemelius came from a middle-class family from Konin . He was born in 1539 as the son of a wealthy merchant. Zemelius studied from 1560 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Krakow . There he obtained the academic degree of baccalaureate in 1562 and - probably after an interruption - completed his studies in 1569 with a master's degree . Zemelius then took up a doctoral degree at the University of Padua and obtained a doctorate in medicine on May 25, 1575 . A few years later he returned to his homeland and settled in Kalisz in 1578 . There he worked as a doctor and politician. He made a great fortune. Zemelius was married to Elisabeth, the daughter of a goldsmith. He had no children and before his death put his fortune into various foundations.

As a pupil of the medical school in Padua, Zemelius was one of the representatives of the new anatomical views of Andreas Vesalius . He is considered to be the founder of the chair of anatomy at today's Jagiellonian University in Krakow (donated in 1602). In the course of the 17th century, this chair was filled with professors from the environment of famous Italian physicians (including students of Girolamo Fabrizio , Fonselius, Francesco Plazzoni , Santorio Santorio and Adriaan van den Spiegel ).

Zemelius died on December 27, 1607 and is buried in the chapel of St. John the Baptist in Konin.

The life and work of Johannes Zemelius was thematized in the novel Doctor Zemelius by Janina Weneda.
