Adriaan van de (n) Spiegel , also Adriaan van den Spieghel or Adrianus Spigeli (us) (* 1578 in Brussels , † April 7, 1625 in Padua ), was a Flemish anatomist , surgeon and botanist .

Adriaan von den Spiegel was the son of a surgeon and first studied medicine in Leuven and Leiden. From the spring of 1601 he studied in Padua with Girolamo Fabrizio da Acquapendente and the anatomist and surgeon Julius Casserius (Giulio Casseri; 1552-1616). Around 1604 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. In 1612 he left Italy and traveled through Belgium and Germany. Shortly afterwards he obtained the title of Medicus Primarius of Bohemia . On December 22nd, 1616 he was appointed professor of anatomy and surgery to succeed Casserius in Padua.

His research concerned the blood vessel and nervous systems as well as the liver anatomy. The Spieghel hernia is named after him. He also worked on flatworms and roundworms.

Honor taxon

The genus Spigelia L. of the plant family of the nugget family (Loganiaceae) was named in his honor.
