Johannes van Meurs

Johannes van Meurs (Latin Jo (h) annes Meursius ; born February 9, 1579 in Loosduinen near Haag ; † September 20, 1639 in Sorø ) was a Dutch classical philologist and historian . He was the father of the philologist John Meursius (1613–1653 / 1654). The French lawyer and writer Nicolas Chorier used Meur's name as a pseudonym .

Life

Johannes van Meurs traveled a large part of Europe as the leader of the sons of the grand pensioner Barnefeld, became professor of history and the Greek language at the University of Leiden and in 1610 the historiographer of Holland, later also a royal Danish historiographer.

His last place of work was the Sorø Akademi , where he taught history and politics.
