The St. Johannes branch church is 611 meters above sea level on the Johannesberg, southeast of St. Paul in the Lavant Valley . The church consecrated to John the Baptist belongs to the collegiate parish of St. Paul .

Building description

The church is a small, originally Gothic building with a lower church that was heavily modified in the Baroque era . Buttresses support the retracted choir . The tower in the northwest, designated in 1694, has round-arched sound openings and is crowned by a Biedermeier helmet with a lantern. A two-armed, two-flight, covered staircase is attached to the southwest facade, which leads to the portal of the upper church. The lower church has an entrance at ground level. During the restoration in 1995, the architectural decor from 1694 was restored. Switbert Lobisser painted the two frescoes next to the south-east entrance , the Visitation of Mary is marked with "SL 29", the Good Shepherd below is not signed.

The nave of the upper church has a flat roof. In the south-west there is a wooden gallery. A round arched triumphal arch connects the nave with the rib-vaulted, late Gothic choir with a three-eighth end. The sacristy on the first floor of the tower has a groin vault . The lower church, enlarged in Baroque style, has a flat barrel vault. The oval ceiling painting with the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was painted in 1878 by L. Fantoni, who also painted the choir in neo-baroque style and redesigned the furnishings.

Facility

The high altar from 1698 bears the figures of Saints John the Baptist and Blasius , above a Madonna enthroned and on top a group of guardian angels . The side altar from the second half of the 17th century shows St. Florian in the middle picture . The pulpit dates from the end of the 17th century. Other furnishings in the church include an oil painting of the Descent from the Cross from the end of the 17th century, a painting of Saints Isidore and Notburga from the 18th century, a painting with the Seven Sorrows of Mary from 1825, a Johannessschüssel from the 18th century, an um Madonna figure from 1880 and a baldachin niche made around 1730. The wooden relief of the hermit Dietrich von Spanheim (1253–1303) was created by Switbert Lobisser around 1930. Dietrich von Spanheim lived in the hermit hermitage a little below the church.
