The rectory

The well-preserved rectory was built in 1626, before the Thirty Years War hit the country. In the past there was a building next to the rectory, which was used as a brewery and in which the church brewed its own beer. The Schöndorf Church owned as much land as a medium-sized farm. The necessary stables and barns were available for this. These were managed with compulsory labor of all "small houses" in Schöndorf, Külmla and Tausa. On June 20, 1919, the parish barn burned down, a spread to the rectory and the stable buildings could be prevented. In an American air raid on Schöndorf during World War II on March 27, 1945, part of the outbuildings were destroyed and the house was badly damaged.

The current church

In 1716/17 the church was built in its present form with the baroque structure and the pulpit wall .

Until the middle of the 19th century, the church had a large porch at the main entrance, from which the galleries were accessible. In 1850, in the course of a total renovation, the stairs were changed and the second gallery was lowered a little. At the end of the 19th century the chancel received stained glass windows. The organ dates from 1883 and has a neo-Gothic prospect.

In 1890 a new bronze bell was put into service, which was removed from the church tower in 1917 to be melted down for the construction of weapons for the First World War . The farewell service for the old bells took place on June 24, 1917. The bronze bell was replaced by an iron bell.

Further renovations were carried out in 1928 and 1966 sober in white and gray. The font and the altar have been redesigned. In 1996/97 the roof and church ceiling followed, then the interior color renovation, as well as the floor and the chairs.

On July 6, 1997, Regional Bishop Roland Hoffmann inaugurated the village church in the name of Johannes. The renovation cost 400,000 DM.

An octagonal roof turret crowns the church building .

New bell and new belfry

The belfry had to be restored in 2014 because rot and insects no longer ensured the load-bearing capacity of the old beams. At the same time, a new bronze bell was cast, which replaced the old iron bell from 1917. The casting of the first bell on November 29, 2013 in Karlsruhe failed, so a second was cast. The new bell of the Trinity was received on September 14, 2014 with a bell greeting, during which the new bell was driven through the three villages of the parish, and a service.

The renovation and casting of the new bell cost 30,000 euros. The funds for this were used from donations and lottery funds.
