The Johanneskirche in Erhaben-Hargarten is a Catholic branch church of the parish of St. Andreas and Assumption of Mary in Reimsbach . The church is consecrated to St. John and is located on a hill between the two Beckingen districts of Erhaben and Hargarten .

history

In 1963, a church building association was founded in Hargarten and Bringing , which was supposed to enable the construction of a branch church in the parish of Reimsbach. In 1966, four architects were invited to submit building plans. A commission of experts decided in favor of the construction plan by the Trier architect Peter van Stipelen . Construction began in the fall of 1968 and the shell was completed on April 24, 1970 . The opening of the church was celebrated on June 25, 1972 (St. John's Day).

The Johanneskirche was looked after from 1974 to 1979 by the regional youth pastor Franz Josef Mühlhausen and from 1979 to 1984 by the regional youth pastor Josef Mettel. Today the adjacent rectory is no longer owned by the parish and has been sold. In 2006, the Mahr Heizungsbau company installed a new heating system for the church and youth home.

Architecture and equipment

The particular form of the church is justified by the fact that "modern church architecture has developed new forms of expression" and "the structural form of the church should as far as possible stand out from profane buildings". In the church, a small gap was created between the altar and the church visitors. The interior is divided into three bench blocks .

The ceiling , which rises sharply towards the chancel, should never give the church visitor the feeling of being lost and underline the liturgical dominance of the altar. This effect is underlined by the special lighting. The octagonal, limestone altar is adorned with a mosaic cross .

The church can be viewed from the new building areas in Erhaben and Hargarten. The church tower can be seen both from Erhaben and Hargarten and from the connecting road between Reimsbach and Erhaben. The entire church was clinkered from the inside and the ceiling is clad with wooden panels. The bell system was installed by the Werner Marx company from St. Wendel . The Johanneskirche has only one bell whose ringing can still be heard in both adjacent districts and sounds at 7 a.m., 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Youth home / parish home

The youth home (today parish home) with a large hall, two youth rooms, a kitchen and a workshop was inaugurated on November 22, 1977. One of the group rooms serves as a meeting point for the parish community's Catholic youth club. This organizes various events in the youth home, such as the discos, but also meetings of the youth or senior afternoons.

The current adjoining cemetery was inaugurated in 1970. The crypt of St. John's Church, which was expanded as such in April 1974, served as a temporary morgue until a morgue was built at the entrance to the cemetery in 1988. The cemetery has 500 graves and the above-mentioned regional youth pastor Franz Josef Mühlhausen is also buried on it.
