The Johanniter Hospital Geesthacht is a general hospital with 249 beds in a non-profit organization in Geesthacht in the Schleswig-Holstein district of the Duchy of Lauenburg . It is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Hamburg .

history

The Geesthacht Municipal Hospital was founded in 1946 and was initially located in a building previously used as a youth hostel . In 1951 they moved into a new clinic.

On 1 January 1982, took over St. John Society of Nursing in the Duchy of Lauenburg the Municipal Hospital in their ownership and named it in St. John's Hospital at Geesthacht. Until the end of 1986 the city of Geesthacht was still involved in the management of the hospital through a transfer agreement.

Until the end of 2004 the supporting company belonged entirely to the Prussian Cooperative of the Order of St. John . When Johanniter GmbH was founded on October 23, 2003, 51% of each of the twelve Johanniter hospitals in Germany were transferred to the newly founded GmbH. The local cooperatives hold the remaining shares.

In 1986, after a three-year construction period, another new building was put into operation. Under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Uwe Barschel, the state contributed 50 million DM to the construction of the new building in his home town.

In 1987 the then Green Member of the Bundestag Thomas Wüppesahl accused the hospital of deficiencies in the quality of the medical work in a leaflet campaign. There were a number of lawsuits against Wüppesahl. In 1988, Wüppesahl was acquitted in a criminal trial for insult because the court found the accusations against the hospital to be proven.

In 1996 an extension for the psychiatry department followed.

The house is supported by the Johanniter Society for Nursing in the Duchy of Lauenburg , in which Johanniter GmbH and the Prussian Cooperative of the Order of St. John are involved. The Johanniter Hospital is listed with 249 beds in the 2010 hospital plan of Schleswig-Holstein.

The hospital employs 480 full-time and part-time employees, including 54.5 doctor positions. The surgery has 76 beds, four intensive care beds, the internal medicine 76 beds with four intensive care beds, the Gynecology / Obstetrics about 52 beds that psychiatry over 50 inpatient beds and 12 day-care places, more places are for Psychosomatics reported.

Every year over 11,250 inpatients and over 15,200 outpatients are cared for, with around 600 births taking place in the hospital each year. The hospital ensures the supply of the people from Geesthacht and from the southern district of the Duchy of Lauenburg .
