John Clements studied medicine from 1944 at Cornell University with the MD degree in 1947. After that he was research assistant in physiology with Eugene DuBois until 1949 ; from 1951 to 1962 he did research on lung physiology at the Army Chemical Center in Maryland . Clements studied surfactants from the early 1950s, researching their physico-chemical properties, especially for lung stabilization. He also developed a simple test that could detect the presence of surfactants in fetuses ( foam test ). A lack of this substance in the lungs leads to respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn ( blue baby syndrome ). He also developed an artificial surfactant with Burroughs Wellcome (Exosurf) for the treatment of neonates with respiratory distress syndrome.
