John George Archer (born April 9, 1936 in Whitstable , † May 28, 1987 in Canterbury ) was an English football goalkeeper .

Career

Archer made 17-year-old towards the end of the 1953/54 season as a goalkeeper of Whitstable Town in the Kent League to attention and was committed after only a few appearances in April 1954 by Grimsby Town . The goalkeeper made his debut under coach Billy Walsh in the Football League Third Division North at the season opener 1954/55 in a 3-0 win against AFC Rochdale . After six missions in which he parried a penalty, he lost his place due to injury to former goalkeeper Clarrie Williams , but returned between October and November for another four league appearances in the gate of Grimsby and held another penalty. In mid-January 1955, he had his contract canceled due to homesickness and returned to Whitstable Town in non-league football .

During his military service he played for Canterbury City for some time and continued his career, after a further stay with Whitstable, in the Southern League with Ashford Town and Margate FC . Archer, who was a professional boat builder, died in 1987 of a brain tumor .
