John Arpin (born December 3, 1936 in Port McNicoll, Ontario , † November 8, 2007 ) was a Canadian composer , pianist , musician , arranger and entertainer .

Act

Arpin was at the time of his death as a virtuoso Ragtime - pianist . He trained at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto , graduated at the age of 16, and went to the University of Toronto . Arpin recorded more than sixty albums, mostly ragtime, but also Broadway music, pop music and European classical music . He has been nominated three times for the Juno Prize, which is awarded for outstanding shows in Canadian music. In June 1998 he won the Scott Joplin Award from the Scott Joplin Foundation, Sedalia, Missouri.

The late ragtime great Eubie Blake referred to John Arpin as "the Chopin of ragtime" and The New York Times referred to him as the "judge of ragtime" (alluding to Svyatoslav Richter ). High Fidelity magazine wrote about one of his albums, “This is the best recorded collection of piano rags that I know of and is, I suspect, the most authentically performed.” (“This is the best collection of records of piano rags that I know, and I assume, the most authentic that has ever been recorded. ")

Compositions

Noteworthy among his own compositions is "Jogging Along" (a themed piece for the demanding CBC (Canadian radio) program Morningside).

He also composed the theme for the Children's Ontario TV Shows , Polka Dot Door and Polka Dot Shorts, and writes the music for the shows.

Arpin composed the themes for various Canadian TV shows in the 1960s. His Lyric Suite for Piano, Strings and Percussion won first prize among 450 entries for the Yamaha Second International Original Concert in Tokyo . He also arranged music for various Canadian music recordings.
