John Ashworth (born July 4, 1937 in Nottingham ) is a retired English football player . The multiple amateur national team won in 1966 with the FC Wealdstone the FA Amateur Cup and denied 1,963 a game in the Football League Second Division for FC Portsmouth .

Career

Ashworth played in the late 1950s as a middle runner for the amateur club Kingstonian FC in the Isthmian League , and was with this in 1960 in front of 60,000 spectators at Wembley in the final of the FA Amateur Cup , which by two late goals against Hendon FC with 1: 2 got lost. In 1962 he joined Hughie Lindsay at FC Wealdstone , who initially played in the Athenian League and moved to the Isthmian League in 1964. Parallel to doing his military service in the Royal Navy, he also worked for the professional club Portsmouth FC and came on May 18, 1963 in a 1-1 draw in the second division home game against Middlesbrough FC in the runner row at the side of Bobby Campbell and Harry Harris used, but was no longer available to the club for the next away game. The plan to buy yourself out of the army service in order to become a professional at Portsmouth also failed to materialize. In 1965 he made at least one appearance at Wembley FC .

In 1966 he met Hendon again in the final of the FA Amateur Cup, as team captain he led Wealdstone at Wembley Stadium to a 3-1 win in front of 45,000 spectators. From 1962 to 1966 he played a total of 171 competitive games for Wealdstone, scoring eight goals. He then moved within the Isthmian League to Hendon FC , for whom he scored six goals in 91 competitive games in three seasons. He later played for league rivals Hitchin Town .

From 1963 to 1966 Ashworth appeared regularly for the English amateur national team and the British Olympic selection , often at the side of his two Wealdstone teammates Hughie Lindsay and Charlie Townsend . For the first time he was appointed to the British Olympic team for qualifying games against Wales and Ireland in November 1959. In addition to ten official selection games, Ashworth played in a large number of friendly matches against club and representative teams (including Coventry City , Tottenham Hotspur , Manchester United , Aston Villa , Queens Park Rangers ), on the occasion of a 1-1 draw in January 1964 against the Chelsea FC attested him to have been "outstanding on the Olympic defensive" in the press. For the Olympic selection, he played all four games in the qualification for the Olympic Summer Games 1964 , the team was eliminated against the Greek selection, which was disqualified a little later because of the use of professional players; Great Britain, however, decided not to continue the qualifiers. Ashworth last played a game for the English selection in May 1966 as part of the 1966/67 UEFA Amateur Cup against the Netherlands.
