John B. Stanbury

John Bruton Stanbury (born May 15, 1915 in Clinton , North Carolina , † July 6, 2015 in Westwood , Massachusetts ) was an American physician ( endocrinology , public health).

Stanbury studied at Duke University (Bachelor in 1935) and at Harvard Medical School (HMS) with an MD degree in 1939. This was followed by specialist training (internship) at Massachusetts General Hospital (House Officer 1941/42). After five years of military service in World War II, he continued his training in 1948/49 at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as Chief Resident . At the same time he did research in pharmacology at Harvard Medical School. Afterwards he was a doctor at the MGH and from 1949 head of the thyroid clinic and the associated laboratory (Thyroid Clinic). From 1956 he was also assistant professor and later associate professor at the HMS and from 1966 professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 1981 he went into (active) retirement and was Senior Physician at MGH until 1986.

From 1949 onwards, Stanbury conducted research on diseases of the thyroid gland, initially hereditary diseases associated with the lack of various enzymes associated with the synthesis or control of thyroid hormones. In 1951 he and colleagues wrote a textbook about it. In the same year he led a study on the epidemiology of iodine deficiency in Argentina. He then headed a project of the Pan American Health Organization and the WHO to prevent iodine deficiency in South America. He and colleagues also showed that iodine deficiency during pregnancy can lead to intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities in children, including cretinism . Stanbury was a co-founder of the International Council for the control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICC-IDD). He advised WHO, UNICEF and other organizations on these issues .

He was an honorary doctor of the Universities of Leiden and Pisa. In 1965 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1993 he received the Prince Mahidol Prize .
