John Bishop (guitarist)

John Bishop (actually Gregory Ceurvorst , born October 20, 1946 in Davenport (Iowa) , † December 17, 2011 in Oak Park , Michigan ) was an American rhythm and blues and jazz guitarist .

Life

Bishop, born in Davenport in 1946, began playing the ukulele at the age of eight , and eventually acoustic and electric guitar . He ran away from home when he was 15 and moved to Kansas City , where he performed in a bar under the pseudonym John Bishop . He moved to San Francisco after a few years and then lived in Chicago . There he was a member of the R&B band Pieces of Peace and recorded his debut album Bishop's Whirl (Tangerine Records) in 1969 . In the early 1970s he worked in the backing band of Ray Charles . He also worked with Donny Hathaway and Ramsey Lewis. In 1980 he married the violinist Georgia Frances, with whom he founded the Georgia Frances Orchestra . Bishop died of a heart attack at the age of 65 .

The guitarist should not be confused with the drummer of the same name, John Bishop , who is active in the Seattle jazz scene .
