John Burnett, Baron Burnett

John Patrick Aubone Burnett, Baron Burnett (born September 19, 1945 ) is a British lawyer and politician of the Liberal Democrats .

life and career

Burnett, son of Lieutenant Colonel Aubone Burnett and Joan Bolt, attended oAmpleworth College in North Yorkshire .

Burnett served in the Royal Marines from 1964 to 1970 . From 1965 to 1966 he was platoon commander ( Troop Commander ) of the 42 Commando RM Borneo and from 1967 to 1969 platoon leader and second in command of the 40 Commando RM Far East and Middle East . He finished his military service with the rank of lieutenant .

In 1975 Burnett was admitted to the bar. His main focus was tax law . From 1976 to 1997 he was initially a partner and later a senior partner of Burd Pearse Soliticors in Okehampton .

Burnett was the Council (1985-1997 member of Council ) of the Devon Cattle Breeders' Society . In 1989 he won the National Herd Competition of the Devon Cattle Breeders Society . From 1984 to 1996 he was a member of the Law Society's Revenue Law Committee .

He is also president of the Royal Marines Association local chapter of Tavistock , the president of the charity Mencap, Section Tavistock, of Okehampton Argyle Football Club , of Okehampton Small-Bore Association and Rescue Group , District Dartmoor . He is also a consultant ( Adviser ) of the Special Boat Service Association . (As of July 2012)

Since 2005 he has worked as a freelance consultant at the law firm Stephens & Scown Solicitors .

Membership in the House of Commons

In 1997 Burnett followed Emma Harriet Nicholson , who was called to the House of Lords , as MP for the constituency of Devon West and Torridge . Burnett ran unsuccessfully for this constituency in 1987. From 1997 to 2002 he was spokesman for the Liberal Democrats on legal policy. Burnett served on the Finance Bill Committee from 1998 to 2005 . From 2002 to 2005 he was Shadow Attorney General of the Liberal Democrats. From 1997 to 2004 he was a spokesman for internal affairs and legal issues. From 2004 to 2005 he was the spokesman for the Office of the Second Solicitor General's Department. As a result of Burnett's decision not to run again in 2005, there was a swing of 5,000 votes against his successor in the 2005 general election.

In May 2000, Burnett supported the creation of the Limited Liability Partnerships Bill (2000) with several interventions, which enabled lawyers ( solicitors ) to continue working in partner companies, but to take advantage of some of the legal and tax advantages of a limited company .

Burnett voted several times in his eight years as a member of the House of Commons against his own party. In several votes on the Iraq War 2002/2003, he distanced himself from his own party line.

Membership in the House of Lords

In May 2006 he was named a Life Peer with the title Baron Burnett, of Whitchurch in the County of Devon . On June 6, 2006, he was officially inducted into the House of Lords ; on July 17, 2006, he gave his inaugural address.

He was from 2007 to 2009 Liberal Democrat spokesman for Planning ( Planning ) and 2009-2010 for Food and Agricultural Affairs.

Burnett is regularly present on meeting days.

family

Burnett married Elizabeth Sherwood de la Mare in 1971, the daughter of Sir Arthur James de la Mare (1914-1994) and Katherine Elizabeth.
