John Christian Kunkel (1859)

John Christian Kunkel (born September 18, 1816 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , †  October 14, 1870 there ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Kunkel attended the public schools in Gettysburg and then studied until 1839 at what later became Jefferson College in Washington . After a subsequent law degree at Carlisle Law School and his admission to the bar in 1842, he began to work in Harrisburg in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1844 and 1845, and again in 1850 . From 1851 to 1853 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he was President in 1852. In the presidential election of 1844 he supported Henry Clay , who was defeated by the Democrat James K. Polk .

In the congressional elections of 1854 , Kunkel was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Ner Middleswarth on March 4, 1855 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1859 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . From 1855 to 1857 Kunkel was chairman of the militia committee. In his second legislative period (1857 to 1859) he represented the Republican Party , of which he had meanwhile become a member. In 1858 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Kunkel practiced as a lawyer again. He died on October 14, 1870 in his hometown of Harrisburg, where he was also buried. His grandson John C. Kunkel (1898–1970) was also a member of Congress.
