John Coquillon
John "Johnny" Coquillon (born July 29, 1930 as Albert Louis Coquillon in Montréal , Canada ; † January 1987 in Windsor and Maidenhead , Berkshire , United Kingdom ) was a Canadian cameraman with a wide range of fields of activity from documentaries and children to horror - and an action film by Sam Peckinpah .
Life
The Franco-Canadian Albert Louis Coquillon, mostly known in the industry as John or Johnny, went to Pinewood Studios in London at the age of 14 , where he began his career as a second camera assistant. From 1954 he worked for some time in Africa and was involved in the production of religious documentaries. There, together with Henry Geddes, he founded his own production company "World Safari", which produced low-budget films with an adventurous flair for young audiences ( Toto and the Poachers , Ali and the Camel , The Last Rhino ) based in Africa . Coquillon also made documentary footage of Africa that was later used in feature films such as the Bob Hope comedy Bob on Safari .
Back in England in 1960, Coquillon continued his work as a cameraman for short (around 60 minutes) children's films. It was not until 1967 that orders for full-length feature films for an adult audience were added. Initially, Coquillon photographed horror films for the production company AIP , followed by action material, some of which were highly budgeted. Commitments also took him to Germany ( Inside Out - A brilliant bluff , Steiner - Das Eiserne Kreuz ), his native Canada (" Mr. Patman", "The Second Man ") and Hollywood . There he got some notable recordings for the Peckinpah productions Pat Garrett Chasing Billy the Kid and The Osterman Weekend .
In addition, John Coquillon continued to work as a cameraman in Africa (second unit photography in 1966 for The Last Safari , chief camera for The Four Feathers and New York-Tangier - blood trail over the equator ). Coquillon, who had also shot a number of television films, committed suicide at the gates of London in early 1987.

Remarks
- ↑ So far, only very fragmentary and sometimes incorrect life data of Coquillons have been published. The year of birth 1933, which is often read, is definitely not applicable. The year 1930 is confirmed by recordings in ship's papers from April 1955 and April 1957, when Coquillon traveled twice from Southampton (England) to Durban (South Africa) and back for the purpose of taking photographs . The death index, see note 2, also confirms this date
- ↑ The "Death Index 1916-2005 England & Wales" states: "Death: Jan 1987 - Windsor and Maidenhead, Berkshire, England"
- ↑ The said ship's papers (note 1) clearly state Canadian citizenship
