John Davison (diplomat)

John Samuel Davison (born May 21, 1933 in Detroit , † June 16, 2009 in Morlaix ) was an American diplomat .

Life

John Davison first studied at Harvard University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1955 . As a Rhodes Scholarship holder , he attended the University of Oxford , where he earned Masters degrees in politics, philosophy and economics in 1957 . In 1961, he graduated from Harvard with a Bachelor of Laws degree .

Davison joined the United States Department of State in 1962 . African affairs became his main focus . He worked in the diplomatic service in various countries in Africa, from 1978 to 1980 as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim in Benin , and also in Lesotho , Madagascar and Sudan , among others . In 1993 Davison became US ambassador to Niger . He held this office until 1996. Most recently, he was director of West African affairs at the State Department in Washington, DC

In 1998 John Davison retired and moved to Santec in France , the hometown of his second wife. He died of multiple myeloma in a French hospital in 2009 .
