John E. McMurry

John Edward McMurry (born July 27, 1942 in New York City ) is an American chemist ( organic chemistry ). He was a professor at Cornell University .

McMurry graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1963 and was at the 1967 Columbia University with Gilbert Stork with the work The isoxazole annelation reaction doctorate . He then became Assistant Professor in 1967 and Professor in 1975 at the University of California, Santa Cruz and in 1980 at Cornell University.

He deals with organic synthesis. The McMurry reaction (coupling of two ketones or aldehydes to form an alkene ) is named after him. He is also known for a number of chemistry textbooks.

In 1991 he received the Max Planck Research Award and in 1987 the Humboldt Research Award . He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1985). In 1969 he received a research grant ( Sloan Research Fellowship ) from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation .

He has been married since 1964 and has three sons.
