The Robert Moses Niagara power plant is a run-of-river power plant on the Niagara River in Lewiston , New York State . The power plant went into operation in 1961 after three years of construction and consists of 13 generators with an installed capacity of 2.4 GW . In the year it went into operation, it was the largest hydropower plant in the United States. The facility is named after city planner Robert Moses , who was chairman of the New York Power Authority at the time .
To the east of the power plant is the Lewiston pumped storage power plant , opposite the Sir Adam Beck power plant on the Canadian side of the Niagara River .
