The Sir Adam Beck power plants ( English Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Generating Stations ) on the Niagara River in Niagara Falls , Province of Ontario in Canada , consist of the two neighboring power plants Sir Adam Beck I & II and the pumped storage power plant Sir Adam Beck . The power plants are operated by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The two run-of-river power plants together have an installed capacity of almost 2 GW , the pumped storage power plant has an installed capacity of 174 MW. The facilities are named after Adam Beck , a Canadian politician and founder of Ontario Hydro .
location
The power plants located near Niagara Falls are operated with water from the Niagara River and to a small extent from the Welland River . East of the power plant, on the US side of the Niagara River, is the Robert Moses Niagara power plant in the immediate vicinity . The distribution of the water from the Niagara River between the US power plant Robert Moses and the two Canadian power plants Sir Adam Beck I & II has been regulated by an agreement since 1950, the Niagara River Water Diversion Treaty .
Power plants
Adam Beck I.
The older Adam Beck I power plant was put into operation in 1922 with three machine sets, each consisting of a water turbine with a salient pole generator . By 1930, a total of ten machine sets with a total output of 498 MW had been installed. The height of fall between the upper and lower water is 91.4 m. The water is channeled from the upper reaches of the Niagara River to the power plant via a 20 km long canal. The power station was called Queenston Chippawa Power Station until 1950 and is listed as a National Historic Site of Canada .
Adam Beck II
The Adam Beck II power plant was commissioned in 1954 and consists of 16 machine sets with a total output of 1,499 GW. The water originally came from the upper reaches of the Niagara River via two 9 km long tunnels. Between 2006 and 2013, as part of the Niagara Tunnel Project, these tunnel systems were replaced by a 10.2 km long and 12.7 m wide tunnel as a pressure tunnel . Thanks to the new tunnel system, the water of the Niagara can be used more efficiently.
Sir Adam Beck pumped storage power plant
The pumped storage power plant built by the English Electric Company went into operation in 1957. In the power plant are six Dériaz - pump turbines erected, it is thus one of the few power plants in the world that uses this type of turbine. The power plant operates with exceptionally high fluctuations in the delivery and head heights. In pumping mode the delivery heights are between 18 and 27 m, in turbine mode between 14 and 26 m. The switch from turbine to pump operation takes a few minutes and takes place several times a day.
