John Ferguson (born June 22, 1848 in Alexandria , † September 6, 1929 in Kilmarnock ) was a Scottish football player . In his playing career, he won the Scottish Cup three times in a row with FC Vale of Leven in the 1870s .

John Ferguson was born in Alexandria , West Dunbartonshire , about 25 kilometers northwest of Glasgow in 1848 . The West Dunbartonshire region is considered to be the cradle of Scottish football . Before Ferguson joined the Vale of Leven football club, founded in 1872, he was a very successful middle-distance runner. He ran professionally and made a living from it; before he discovered football, which at the time was still an amateur sport. He was one of the leading Scottish runners of his time. In a half-mile race at Powderhall Stadium , he set a Scottish mile record of 4 minutes and 16.5 seconds. Ferguson was also active as a Shinty player. With FC Vale of Leven, Ferguson won the Scottish Cup three times in a row in 1877 , 1878 and 1879 . Ferguson was considered one of the best and most popular strikers in Scotland at the time.

He moved to Kilmarnock at the beginning of the 20th century . He died there at the age of 81 in 1929.

National team

Between 1874 and 1878 Ferguson completed six caps for the Scottish national team , scoring five goals. He made his debut for Scotland on March 7, 1874 in a 2-1 win over England at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow. In his third international match against Wales in March 1876, he scored the first goal.
