Bunny Ahearne
John Francis "Bunny" Ahearne (born November 19, 1900 in Wexford , † April 11, 1985 ) was an Irish ice hockey official . He was President of the IIHF from 1957 to 1960, from 1963 to 1966 and from 1969 to 1975.
Life
In 1933 he became secretary of the British Ice Hockey Association (BIHA), a position he held for over 40 years. He is credited with the great merit of establishing ice hockey in Great Britain and helping the British national ice hockey team to win a gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games .
In 1968 he received the Golden Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria . He was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977 and in 1997 with induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame . He is also the namesake of the Ahearne Cup .
