Ahearne Cup

Ahearne Cup is the name of two ice hockey tournaments. The first was held from 1952 to 1977, the second was re-established in 2001. Both are named after a British ice hockey official Bunny Ahearne .

The original Ahearne Cup

The first Ahearne Cup was held in December in Sweden from 1952 to 1977 with the exception of 1957 and was co-organized by the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter . The finals took place at every event in the Johanneshovs Isstadion in Stockholm . In addition to club teams, national teams could also take part in the competition, even if this only happened very rarely. While most of the teams came from Sweden, numerous teams from Great Britain , the Soviet Union , Czechoslovakia , Canada and Finland also took part in the Ahearne Cup.

The Swedish clubs Södertälje SK and Djurgårdens IF have the most tournaments at the first Ahearne Cup with 20 starts each, followed by Leksands IF and AIK Ishockey with twelve entries each. Djurgårdens IF was also able to win the competition four times the most, followed by Harringay Racers and HK Spartak Moscow with three tournament wins each.

Due to the participation of Canadian teams as well as British clubs, in which many Canadian legionaries played, the Ahearne Cup was the first encounter with the North American style of play for most European players. With the increasing professionalization of North American ice hockey, there was for Canadian and the narrowing of European Event schedules eventually led to the Ahearne Cup being held for the last time in 1977.

The "new" Ahearne Cup

The new Ahearne Cup was founded in 2001 by the British Ice Hockey Superleague . In the competition, several teams from one league play against clubs from another. In 2004, played teams from the British Ice Hockey Superleague against clubs from the German Ice Hockey League , 2003 were British against Norwegian teams in the Elite Series in 2006 met clubs of the newly formed British Elite Ice Hockey League on teams of the DEL.
